What is Metastasis?

It is called as metastasis when the cancer cells migrate to and from the organs and settlements far from the origin. For example, breast cancer is migrated into the liver and is called liver metastasis. Cancer cells are spread using different pathways:

  • Direct propagation to neighboring organs
  • Propagation of lymph nodes and then distant regions using lymph channels

Through the blood, they usually metastasize to the distant organs such as the stomach, pancreas, and large intestine cancers through the portal vein, which brings liver blood from the digestive tract.
