Liver metastasis

Liver metastasis is a cancerous tumor starting at another location in the body and spreading to the liver. It is called the second hepatic cancer. The primary hepatic cancer is hepatocellular and cholangiocellular cancer originated from the liver. It is more common in people with risk factors such as hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Other names of this disease are as following:

  • Liver metastasis
  • Metastatic hepatic disease
  • Opacity 4 or spread cancer

What are the symptoms and indications of the liver metastasis?

There are no complaints and findings in the early stages of metastasis. Over time, when cancer begins to block the bile ducts and veins, the following complaints occur:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Dark urine
  • Flatulence or gas in the abdomen
  • Jaundice in eyes and skin
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weakening of consciousness
  • Fever and sweating
  • Swelling and pain on the right side of the abdomen due to liver growth

When to see a doctor?

If you have one or more of the above mentioned complaints, it would be useful to see your doctor. If you have the following symtoms, you may need to act faster and the problem may be serious.

  • Nausea or vomiting observed more than once a day
  • Bloody vomiting
  • Unknown weight loss
  • Decreased bowel movements
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Swelling of the feet
  • Jaundice in skin and eyes

If you have unknown cancer and have the above mentioned complaint, appeal to your doctor.Liver metastasis can be observed at an early stage when you perform your tests regularly.

What are the causes of the liver metastasis?

The risk of spreading cancer to the liver depends on the body that it originates from. The following types of cancer are likely to have liver metastasis.

  • Breast
  • Large intestine
  • Rectum
  • Kidney
  • Euosophagus
  • Lungs
  • Ovary
  • Uterus
  • Pancreas
  • Stomach

Even if the cancerous organ is removed, the liver metastasis can occur many years later. If you have known cancer, you should know the symptoms and complaints of liver metastasis.It is advisable to be examined regularly.

Diagnosis of the liver metastasis

  • Blood analysis: Abnormal values indicating abnormalities in liver functions. Increases in cancer markers.
